Rondo Douglas Violin Bass

Anyone know if this one really "is fairly loud even without an amp?" I need a bass to practice on in the living room while the kids go wild, I can't hear my electric minus the amp, and I can afford the $135+shipping for this one.

I apologize for my finances.

You may want to try out a rockman style headphone amp or just a little pignose amp. I have used a little battery/AC peavey audition 10 guitar amp for low volume practice. You can usually pick up a small amp like those for 35 - 50 dollars and you can adjust the volume to suit the situation.

They are just a little bit louder(more resonant) than a solidbody bass, but by no means loud enough to play around the house with no amp.

And with the kids going wild. . . forget it, you need an Ampeg 8x10!

Guys, thank you for your suggestions :) You're right, keeping a second amp in the living room is more practical and cheaper than buying a whole new bass, especially as I love my bass--a 1984 Peavey Fury with the slanted pickup.

Why didn't I think of that? Brain gone bye-bye :rollno:

I ordered the Jay Turser model for $250. I half considered this one, but I've played a Turser before and loved it so I went for it. I think the Turser is a lot closer to the Hofner than this one.

True, I would certainly hope for all the extra $$$$ you would get something more!!

I'm thinking about getting one of these. I had been looking at the Brice model, but this one looks nicer, and costs less. And everything I've heard about Douglas quality has been pretty good.

To play while the kids go wild, you could consider an Aria Sinsonido. There was a thread here a month or so ago with a lot of detail about these. You can practice with headphones directly into the bass: no amp. And it's a nice piece of work though an amp too.
New price is a bit above the one you're looking at, but used could suit you.
