This bass design I've been working on calls for a semi-hollow body. I know I'll need a plunge router, but does anyone have any suggestions on brand and/or features??

I need a router!

I'm in the market for a new router myself, so i'll be watching this thread too!! I saw a Riobi (IIRC) at home depo that came with 3 basses (plunge, D handle, and standard), but I wasn't sure if there were better brands that might be worth the extra $$$

A couple of months ago I got a Porter-Cable 895PK that I'm liking alot. Fixed base, plunge base, variable speed. It took a little bit of getting used to. It's a little more complicated to set up than my old router but I've got it figured out now. Initially I wasn't sure I would like the weight of the thing. My old router was really light, but I've gotten used to it and I think the weight does help with the control. I'd recommend it.
The Dewalt 621 and the Hitachi M12V are both very good routers for reasonable prices, around $159(sometimes less) for the Hitachi and $220 for the Dewalt. Also the Porter Cable as mentioned earlier is very good as well. Check out Amazon for reviews.

The edge guide is a neat tool also. I use the plain base in my router table with a large lexan base and the plunge base is set in the sliding carriage of my neck jig so I can plunge then move smoothly.

Cisco 2621XM will work wonders. Oh, wait...that's an IP router. Sorry.
Dewalt makes excellent stuff. Just stay away from lower-end stuff like Black & Decker.

Except Ryobi- no offense to anyone or their tools, but IME Ryobi stuff is always lightly built & vibrates. Heavy=steady- again, IME.

I've got a hitachi drill that I like a lot. I hope this is a reflection of their other tools (i.e. router?).
Anybody tried that Milwaukee router that has the body-grip handle?

My dad bought me a Skil jig(or saber if you prefer) saw. I use it only out of respect for the man, & don't have the heart to tell him it's not so good.

But if you ever decide to make another - you may regret having paid for a router that is no longer usable.
Not sure about where you live, but here in the UK you can hire specialist tools... so that might be an option to explore for your first project before committing to a purchase.
