Mesa 1516/1516b/1516be

I've been doing a little bit of light reading (thank you Ben Strange) and from what I understand, the original 1516 had two upgrades available. The 1516be upgraded the stock Eden 10" speaker to EVand can handle 650 watts. Now I have a couple questions about the other models.

How is the 1516b different from the 1516 and 1516be?
Is it possible to tell by a picture which cabinet contained the Eden speaker? I would venture to guess that the Eden-containing ones had a greyish 10" speaker. I'm basing this on SWR's designs.

What can you guys tell me? Thanks.

If I recall from 12-14 years ago, the only differences were the 10" speaker. I have a 1516 from before the Eden ever came about, and mine still has the standard issue 80w 10" Black Shadow speaker.
If I recall, the 10" options were: the 80w Black Shadow, the 150w Eden, and the 200w EV.
So that's where you get the three designations; 1516, 1516b, and 1516be.

Yeah, the Eden equipped cabs could be spotted a mile away, as they had the one grey speaker. But the EV and BS were both black so were harder to identify from a distance.

My grey 10"speaker (presumably eden)is farting but its a 1516be cab, so I'm kinda confused?? Just started using it with my new mpulse 600, sounded great for 2 days before the speaker let go, if it is the speaker?? Maybe its the wiring or low-pass filter. The tweeter crackles as well but not hte 2x 6"speakers. Does anyone have any ideas?? We are touring Finland next week so gonna try and get it seen to in Helsinki.
Cheers

You could run a quick test on that farting 10" by removing your grill and using your hands open palm to carefully push the speaker in and out a few times while listening (and feeling) for a dragging voice coil. This movement should be completely smooth and quiet. If you hear or feel anything, its time for a recone or replacement. (you might test your 15" and both 6's too)

I suppose your tweeter crackle issue could be a defective crossover or poor wire connections somewhere but I'd guess your Tweeter is probably just wore out. If you cant find a replacement Tweeter in time for your tour, you could simply disconect either 1 of its 2 wires and insulate (and secure the loose wire end with tape) to stop the tweet from working/crackling.

There is no low pass filter.

There is only a high pass for the tweeter.

The 10 and the 6's are run full range directly from the input jack.

Check out this thread about my 1516be repairs. It contains a copy of the wiring sketch that was sent to me from Mesa:

looked into these a few years ago, I think the designations are as follows:

1516 = single input, full range cab
1516b = bi-amp cab, one input for the 15, one input for the upper drivers, and a single full range input
1516be = bi-amp 1516b in a Mesa tanklike roadready case.

Pretty sure the E in 1516be does not stand for Eden

nice cab, enjoy!

You're 2/3 correct. The "e" does indeed signify an EV driver.

The EV drivers are easy to spot, because they generally had a dark black cone, and were kevlar impregnated. I would be hard pressed to be able to describe the difference, but I could point it out to you in person easily.

I love these cabs - I don't have one currently, but hopefully I'll nail one down soon enough.
