Double Bass Carmen Fantasy + Motivy Recording

Dear TBers,

I am Mark Lock from Taiwan and am senior in high school right now. I have studied with the associate principal of the Taiwan national symphony orchestra for two and a half years in my three years of playing the bass. I have some recordings of performances that i did recently, and I have sent these off to my colleges that I plan to attend. I am NOT applying to any conservatories but am sending these recordings off as supplementary material for the music departments to evaluate. Please tell me what you think of these. Thanks.

I'm only familiar with Motivy so that is the only one I'll comment on. I've performed the piece a few times and it's very cool to hear a different interpretation. I don't play it in solo tuning for one.

I did notice that much of the first section seems to stay the same dynamic. You may want to check out some of the dynamics throughout the piece.

In general you are extremely clear with fast 16th passages, esp. at the end of the recording, at the beginning there was a little scratch from the bow on some of them .... I'm sure you know that.

I liked it a lot, it's an extremely different way than I play it and you absolutely convinced me of yours also. Great playing!!

I've only listened to the Motivy recording so far. I played this on my Master's recital at Peabody a month ago.

The tempo at the beginning seemed way too fast. If I remember correctly the marking is "Largo e picacere." I'm pretty sure I spelled that wrong. Largo is the slowest tempo marking in modern music. Picacere means to use rubato freely. Rubato doesn't mean to ignore the Largo. The tempo of the second slow section was good but it didn't feel like you had as much control as in the first slow section. Slow tempos are always the hardest to get comfortable with.

The fast sections were good. I think the articulations didn't seem to match at times but that might have been intentional. In the spots that aren't speaking so well make sure your bow placement is good. I had problems with this on the lower strings. Getting those first few measures to speak clearly was difficult. I couldn't hear the pizzicatos very well. Overall it seemed a little too neat for my tastes. This should feel more like folk music. This is definitely based off of Hungarian or Bulgarian folk music. I forget if Tabikov is from Hungary or Bulgaria.

Another thing about the second slow section. The notes with lines and dots on them seemed too short. What I did when I played it last was hold the moving note a little longer and the botom note about as short as you played in the recording.

Hi Mark,

There are some spots you probably know about where your intonation gets a little off...and on the faux-Bach lick you seem to bow a little heavy-handed where it falls on the beat (Rabbath doesn't accent the beat for that lick on his recording it just flows across)...just to name a few issues.

But overall you sound great I really like your vibrato very much thanks and good luck!!! :bassist:

Hey Mark, This is Han Han. What a great performance you have. I am impressed. You sure have a great progress.I am very proud of you!

Motivy and Toreador song both shown your motivation of good musicianship and wonderful musicality. Take that spirit with you, young man! I admire that a lot.

with appreciation,
Han Han

P.S. I love your solo tuning sound! That's great!
