Just bought an old Peavey Fury...

Call it fate...
I stopped by Sam Ash ( I normally never shop at there...), because I was curious about Hartke amplifiers. There, with an "as is" tag, sitting forlorn on the discount rack was an early model MIA Peavey Fury. Natural finish, maple neck, 22 fretts, t-40 style "p" knobs and the slanted super ferrite pup slightly closer to the bridge than a Precision.

Why it was on "as is"
-The neck had way too much relief and played terribly.
-The input jack was cackly and had been bent.

I asked about the neck, and they said they didn't have the right tool to try to adjust the neck. I have the tool at home -it came with my t-40-, and the bass sounded good, so I bought it.

Got home.

1) enlarged the truss rod trench slightly with my dremmel,
2) added a slightly oversized nut as a spacer for the truss rod nut
3) installed a 2 buck radio shack mono jack
4) put a few turns on the truss rod.

I've got the action super low (better than my MIM precision), and it sounds great. It has a touch of neck dive, but no more than my parts Jazz. A sweet playing and sounding USA made bass for less than the price of a used afinity squire...

I love these old Peaveys! They are pretty cheap, but they are built so well, and have so much more mojo than the new low-cost basses of today.

Pics coming soon.

Damn! You bring me back to my first "real" bass. I had a Peavey Fury back in '86-87. I sanded the whole thing down and tung-oiled it as well as putting in a Seymour Duncan p/u. I would still have it to this day had it not been for the thief that stole it along with my Carvin LB75.

Here she is. Note the slightly larger the replacement tuner on the E string. I wonder what happened to the origional tuner that the past owner had to replace it? I have not put the truss rod cover back on yet.

Really a great little bass. Anyone have any idea what year it might be before I hit the folks at the Peavey forum.
