ROBERT DELEO

Any fans?

I've been listening to the Army Of Anyone disc & was always a fan of STP....very McCartney-Jamerson-esque playing.

Love the tune Better Place....very tasty bass & sweet fuzzy guitar lead.

What gear does he use?

I remember seeing him with jazz basses....what amps...cabs...fx ?

And very JP Jonesy. he and his brother Dean are HUGE Zep fans.
In STP he used Eden 4x10 and 2x10, Sansamp rack preamp, QSC poweramp, Schecter Model-T DeLeo (Tele bass with PJ) and Schecter J-bass
In AOA he uses same basses, same poweramp, SVT 8x10 bottoms and (I believe) Line 6 modeling preamp.

DeLeo kicks ass. Maybe my favorite 90's rock bass player. Very funky, great groove, great feel, great lines, great tone and he wears his bass down around his knees.

Yes its surprise that he switch to Line 6, he inspired me to buy it and must say its great....

But i must make correction about STP times.....he was long time user Alembic F-1x preamp......but i think somwhere about NO.4 album he add something more " gritty " to his sound and that could be Sansamp...

Also recommend Schecter guitars....i bought model t diamond was really nice decent playing bass, but then I had caught occasion and bought USA schecter (not Model T but PJ EMG config...) and that growls and destroy :D

Also he is one of most " for group playing bassist"...i love his style (but still keep in mind that he is "Hooker" rip off :D which he confess :D )

I play a few STP songs at gigs and they are fun to play. I think DeLeo is a very competent bassist. Some may think he uses too many 5ths and octaves in his fills, but whatever. He doesn't suck.:bassist:

Interstate Love Song is one of my favorite songs period to play live. It has a great flowing groove and it really gets me into playing. I also play Crackerman which is a cool tune. We also do Vaseline and Unglued which are fun but extremely basic to play.

Their Led Zeppelin love comes through a lot. Someone mentioned "Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart". The guitar line in the prechorus is very close to LZ's "Dancing Days", which STP covered for that Zeppelin tribute album.

Interesting to note that JPJ himself has said that he was in demand as a studio bassist (pre-Zep) because he could play in a "Motown style". Not to minimize him, but I always thought JPJ's bass style was mainly a combination of blues rock & Jamerson.

Back on topic, I like Deleo's playing a lot. His brother's chordal style often gives him a lot of room to do his thing. I agree that he's got a great tone on AoA. I like the album alright, but he's definitely the highlight for me. A great compromise between Jamerson's warm thud and a growly modern rock sound.

I once put an old Hagstrom 8 string that I had up for consignment sale in a local, well respected vintage shop.

This is the type of shop where they have a massive list of clients looking for gear, and can sell specific things with a phone call.

24 hours after I put the bass in the store, I got a call saying come pick up your money. When I got there, I asked them how they sold it so fast, and they said they knew someone who was looking, made one phone call and it was sold.

Normally they don't divulge their clients, but it happens that I was good friends with the staff, so they discreetly whispered it to the breeze and I overheard it... Robert Deleo of Stone Temple Pilots.

Naturally I spent the money in the store that day. Thanks Robert :) I hope you've enjoyed your 8 string, because I got a lot of use from my new (used) GK head. :bassist:
