Here I'm putting up for auction an extremely rare and one of the earliest T-40's in existence. For those of you that know about T-40s, this one is a six digit serial number. It precedes the 8M, eight digit numbers. It is dated to early 1978.
Another feature that was only on the earliest production models is the headstock outline tracing goes around the truss rod cover. These were scrapped early on as the women on the production floor had a difficult time getting the tracing evenly around the TRC. Thus, the tracing known as the norm stops at the TRC. This story comes from Chip Todd himself, the creator of the T series instruments.
I rescued this bass from a pawn shop. It has it's share of bumps, bruises, nicks, and buckle rash. I will say that the neck is one of the best I've ever played. When I bought it last year, I checked the truss rod to make sure it worked. It was at full relief. This bass had never been properly set-up. It adjusted just fine and I now have the action really low with no buzzing at all. It's just a great neck. There are nicks on the edges, but there is almost no fret wear.
The bridge is in great condition, no rust or pitting. Toaster pickups are great. Replacement phase switch which is not working. They're easy to come by to replace.
There is a hairline crack at the neck heel of the body. It doesn't affect anything in any way. It's purely cosmetic. Don't be scared away because of this, it's not a problem.
When I bought it, it didn't have a HSC. I bought an original stock T-40 teardrop case. Brown lining intact. All latches work fine. Here are a couple of pics:
