Hi, I just want to say that I am a great fan of yours who also intends to start taking lessons again after more than thirty years of applied ignorance. I am a professor who hopes to take lessons while on sabbtical in a about a year. Nine months of once a week may not be much, but it likely all I can do for a while.:)

Dr. Cheeze. Make absolutely sure that whatever lessons that you take, music and musical things are the core issues that you are paying to learn. Anything else aren't necessary to spend money to pursue.

I was offered an endorsement with every amp company there is at some time or other. But as a bass player I only function at the level of tone, which was something that I personally couldn't find in any amp for many years. Everyone builds great equipment, but, without that one all-important addition (in my opinon) which is great tone.

Markbass sent me a 15 inch bass cabinet that simply changed my musical life in a moment. I so fell in love with the sound of this amp that Marco Devirgiliis, the head of Markbass, named it the Jeff Berlin combo and sells it at all the Guitar Centers nationwide. It is a standard produced cabinet except that I asked that the tweeter be removed from this line as I really hate the tweeter sound

Good Morning Jeff and thanks for your input and time.

What advice would you have for a player that feels they are becoming bored or "stuck in rut" and aren't sure where to take their playing. I know lessons are ideal but if that is not financially feasible what other ideas could you offer.

Just like to express my admiration for your musical expressiveness and ability on the bass. =) You're definitely like a horn player when you play your solos and I just absolutely admire the ability, as well as the ability to grooving when you need to. =) I'm listening to your tracks as we speak!

Just one thing to ask: What do you think of when you play? Or do you not think?

Everybody gets in a study or playing rut. I do, but I choose to ignore the rut and just forge onward. Sometimes it really is a good thing to put your bass in a corner for a couple of days and not think about music, just to let everything settle and start fresh. But, a general philosophy in getting out of a rut is to practice meaningful chock-full-of-musical-vitamins type lessons to get the musical juices flowing.

Good morning Jeff and thanks for generously spending some time here at Talkbass. It is a wonderful thing to do and I wish more artists of your caliber would be as generous... thanks again

I think one of the most valuable services a qualified teacher can do is direct or suggest how best we, as students of music/bass, can be spending our study time. We, as students, may not have the best vantage point to identify what in our core knowledge, or lack thereof, needs improvement. A great teacher immediately assesses those weaknesses and suggests studies that address them, cutting the learning curve exponentially in the process.

Do you agree? comments?

I don't really think when I play, but I definitely think when I practice. Of course when in the midst of a solo, I might think about a direction or maybe an idea to move me from one point to another. But, a gig is supposed to be a spontaneous event while practicing is supposed to be anything BUT, which is one reason why i tell people to avoid metronomes when practicing.

Good Morning Jeff,

My question is this, I would like to improve my skills in walking jazz style, I,ve been playing a good many years and have a pretty good feel for swing, Just need to improve the nuts and bolts part of it. I can read notation, however I never practice reading and play mostly by ear, so my reading skill is pretty much at a snails pace. What could you recomend to get me going in the right direction?
