I'm considering buying a Godin A5 or A4. ... would consider a Cirrus 5
Investigating options - don't need to sell - not in a hurry - can pay cash for a Godin.. Chances are this is not the bass for someone who's seen T-40 naturals going for $300 on Ebay and wants a fretless neck thown in to boot.
ORIGINAL OWNER - HOW I GOT IT (in gradeschool)---
Back in the 70s I used to follow a guy around he was a total Peavey freak. He wanted to teach me bass and insisted on me buying a T-40 as a starter bass. He was right - it is a current classic and highly underrated. For the cash it was the best deal in basses - at least it kept me from buying some cheezeball starter bass.
I could barely hold the bass... quickly went onto getting a smaller Peavey (T-20)... eventually ordered a mahogany Foundation w/mass bridge.
Because this is not a gradeschool kid sized bass, it sat in it's case (yes the legendary bombproof bullet case) most of its life.
ABOUT THE FRETLESS NECK (with position lines) - 2 CUSTOM NECKS & MATCHING SERIAL NUMBERS--
It has a rosewood board with position line markers. This is a custom shop neck - not defretted hack job. The serial numbers match the maple neck that I also have in storage. The headstock is noted as T-40FL. I played Peavey 30 roundwounds for a month or so. Afraid that I was chewing up the neck, I swapped to flatwounds. I kept this bass at home - it did not get used on the road.
In the early 90s a company I worked for was in endorsed by Peavey. At this time, I requested that they make me a fretless neck. To get this through their system, I had to send them an exact serial number. I did not surrender the maple fretted neck - they both have the same serial number.
ORIGINAL MAPLE FRETTED NECK---
As previously discussed, I rarely played the bass... kept it in it's case. When the frettless neck arrived.. the maple was placed in storage. The headstock is noted T-40. Serial numbers match the fretless. There is only minor wear on the frets that could be crowned.
GREAT SUNBURST BODY & ELECTRONICS---
The body is in GREAT shape. It has the cool tobacco sunburst.. zero corrosion on the hardware.. cool early laser "P" logo knobs. Unlike some nutballs, I never modified anything on the electronics - all of the switches are factory. The 1/4 jack stays in the bass and holds the cord like it's supposed to. The pots are all smooth and they have received periodic contact cleaner. I'm careful to not wear belts when playing my basses - most of the time I'll wear clothes that cover pants buttons.
RARE INTONATION TRICK (2 necks)----
As you can probably guess.. setting intonation on a fretless is normally an act of futility. Since both necks are exactly the same scale, the intonation was set with the fretted maple.. then swapped to fretless. I just checked it with my Peterson Strobe and it's still on.
NEVER GIGGED - NEVER ON THE ROAD - ALWAYS STORED at HOME (in my road case)---
You're probably wondering why I'd order a fretless neck and never gig it. Remember this was the early 90s. Fretless and 5String basses were not at most stores. I played a Foundation Fretless while on gigging. This guitar remained at home. On the road I played Foundations through a wall of Peavey thunder.
OVERALL CONDITION---
This bass probably has about 30 hours of playing on it. The finish is as it was shipped. I've never polished it - no yellowing - no cracking The weakest part of the bass is the black plastic portion of the pickup covers do have some minor wear from picks (dumb move on me) - you can not notice this from 3 feet. The pick guard is original and has predictable wear. The chrome is all top great. When in storage the bass was stored vertical. As with any 25+ year old bass, I'd replace or clean the pots - they probably have a minor cleanable scratch.
If you would like, I'm more than willing to deliver to Capitol Guitars (651-225-8888) for a 3rd party evaluation.
--NO HANG TAGS or OWNERS MANUAL--
A collector would have to go out and find the OEM shipped hang tags and owners manual. Remember I was in 4th grade when I bought this bass. Who knew my ElectroHarmonix boxes would be worth more than the pedals?
--IDEAL BUYER---
The ideal buyer for this would be someone who's a vintage collector or dedicated Peavey Freak. If you're considering a fretless, this bass would give you an easy out if you prefer fretted.

The bass is located in St. Paul, MN. I'm more than willing to ship the bass via GreyHound (my preferred method for bulky things). If you're local and serious, you're welcome to try it out. I do have a few amps for you to test it..

Why Would I Sell It?
I have a Foundation fretless that's road worn.. Just received an Ashbory.. Will be buying a Godin. I own more than 25 basses. This one is the most likely to find a better home.
REQUESTS
The bass has Flatwounds that are finally dead. If you do not like dead strings, I'd like to keep them for one of my other basses. If you do not own Shaller Strap Locks, I would like to put original buttons back on.
IF it helps someone, I will be in Naples, FL next month can meet.
As noted, I do not need to sell this bass. I'm not in a hurry. We can both probably guess that it's not legal for me to sell necks individually (since they both have the same serial number).
