Ok, so I just got this really cool Alleva Coppolo LG5, but when I saw the finish and wood, I had Jimmy leave the pickguard off and just ship it to me. The question is, do you like it better with the pickguard or not? I think the fact that there's really no "control plate" possible will swing this vote, but still, IMHO pretty nice looking either way, so let's just see what happens.

On all the way. That's the signature look of the Alleva, and, well, no offense, but it's alder (nice alder, but alder!)

Seriously, either way looks great to me!

Were this a fretless, I'd say the Jaco look would be cool, but seeing as it is fretted, I say go Jamerson!

It just looks "right" with the pickguard, but I can see how you might like it without. Tough choice!

Just floatin' the idea. To be honest, I've never done it. I've heard others talk about doing it, but I'm not sure what it would do to the finish. That's a beautiful instrument and I wouldn't want to mess with it.

I'm kind of a traditionalist on the J basses and like them with guards, but this one just looks great without one. I actually think its the board that matches so well with the burst that makes it.

The funny thing is that I think it looks quite strange without the screws. That's a big part of the old school look to me with the guard. Yeah, it doesn't have the control plate, so it's surely not going to be 'legitimate vintage', but it sure does look old school with the guard screwed on IMO!

I feel your pain though, since it is really quite beautiful without it, and there's 'no going back' once you drill it in.

You know what that means.... TIME FOR ANOTHER ONE

THAT'S CHEATING! I did think about that as well, but really, since I'm not worried about damaging the finish (I don't slap much, and I pretty much never use a pick), that's just a "vote" for no pickguard in my case.

Take it even further! Get a bunch of pickguard screws, and cut the threads off just under the head. Then you can either use a little bit of double-sided tape and tape each screw head into the pickguard holes, or if you aren't worried about the pickguard just glue the screw heads into the pickguard and tape the pickguard on. It will look normal, but with no drilling!


I'm serious about this. I've considering doing this in the past and this idea isn't that far fetched if you think about it.

I guess if you wanted to try it, you could go all out and super glue some screw heads to the guard to give the illusion of it being screwed on.

Yeah, but what about the adhesive on the tape? I literally have no idea how to figure that out.
