Similar experience for me as well - I worked for a music store that was a G&L dealer for a number of years before I actually picked one up and gave it a decent try out through an amp. I was never a big fan of Fenders (P's or Jazz's), and at one point, I thought I'd like to get a Musicman, so I started doing some research - then I read a lot about comparisons between the EBMM and the G&L L series, so I took a dive on a Tribute, as a backup bass. It soon became the one I pulled out all the time, and the only reason I sold it was to get my USA model in the finish I wanted.
Previously, I've owned these basses (among others):
Ric 4001 (Natural w/checker binding)
Hohner Steinberger copies 4 & 5 string
Samick Artist Series 6 strings
Warwick Thumb 6 NT
Ric 4003 (Red w/Black binding/hardware)
Steinberger XL5N (narrow 5 string)
Honestly, I think my GAS is cured (yeah, right....)
Between the 2 basses I own now (the L2500 and the Status Stealth 6) I can't think of anything else I would really care to play - I keep my Tribute L2000 just 'cuz 2 of my bands do a few tunes where I play synths and the singer plays bass, and he's more comfortable on a 4 string.
I do regret getting rid of the Godin A5 I used to own, but maybe someday I'll replace it with a Status Electro 5..... (Uh-oh, am I feeling a little GAS rumble in the lower belly????)
D'OH!!!!!!
