brand new JP custom fretless, best bass in looks feel and sound i know

last summer i decided i wanted a custom fretless bass. i asked for TB help for the parts, wood combinations, electronics, all that stuff.

the help i needed was granted and this resulted in a magnificent instrument. both in looks and sound wise. sound wise is an absolute joy to hear. i also want to stress all the help CFCLEF has given me, a big thanks to you my friend! i owe you big! :bassist:

lets sum the features of this beautiful bass:

nut width: 45 mm (1 3/4")
nut material: bone
width at last fret: 80 mm (3 1/8")
fingerboard radius: 10"
scale length: 34.5"
number of frets: 28
string spacing at bridge: 19 mm (3/4")
neck shape: asymmetrical D (thinner in the D and G strings and fatter in the B and E strings)
truss rods: dual

neck wood (neck through): wenge + wenge + wenge (light oil finish)
head wood: spalted maple + spalted maple truss rod cover
fingerboard wood: ebony, unlined fretless
body wood: black korina with thin ebony accent lines and spalted maple top (oil finish)
logo: non existant (only seen in the wenge electronics cover)

tuners: black Hipshot Ultralites (material: aluminium)
bridge: black Hipshot A bridge (material: brass)
knobs: black (JP standard)
locks: Jim Dunlop strap-lock

pickups: Lindy Fralin Hum Canceling Jazz, 10% overwound

strings: Thomastik Infeld Flatwounds

the "research" of what i wanted lasted for about a month.

then i talked with the luthier (João Pessoa from Portugal) and we nailed everything. the luthier is recognised as one of the best and it has done an excellent work indeed! for more information, you can visit his website.

it took almost 6 months for me to have the bass but the wait was worth it.

lets see the results then. i am sad that today the weather is very grey and the sun light is almost non existant. this means the bass looks WAY BETTER than what you are about to see. anyway, JP told me that this bass will feature the cover of his new website that will probably go live next March if everything goes according to plan. 2010 will be an important year to JP, he will move to a new and better workshop he told me.

in this picture, an overall look of the bass is presented. look at that neck!!! :hyper:

now a closer look at the wood grain. beautiful spalted maple top with ebony accent lines. the black korina ia also very pretty. 3 knobs, volume volume tone

the electronics are lindy fralin. the bass sound is TREMENDOUS. this thing absolutelly destroys :) one of the very first thigs JP told me was the sound this bass has! it sounds like an active bass due to the pickups. he also stated that he will start to recommend lindy fralin pickups for fretless basses. one thing that really made my jaw drop was the sound when slapping it. i cannot believe how can a fretless bass with flat strings sound this amazing when slapping. i have never listened to a bass that sounds this good. fingers and slap.:hyper:

now, the fingerboard. look how nice that ebony is. and also very confortable. the neck is made from a 3 piece wenge. it is asymetrical which i find a very useful characteristic.

a look at the jack cavity. hipshot type a bridge for good sustain and jim dunlop strap locks.

the nut is made from bone. the truss rod cover is spalted maple as well as the rest of the bass head. it looks so beautiful  notice that there is no JP logo. at first i asked no to have any logos but i understood this is a JP bass and had to had a logo. i had agreed with JP to make something with a laser but not too fancy. he opted to not do anything and i have to agree that i prefer it this way. of course i will talk to everyone about his basses, he will have free publicity from me. always!

another take at the fingerboard. haha, this is a joy to play. i have to practice more though, i still miss a lot of notes.

a closer view of the spalted maple head top. very good looking, even when i have almost no sun light.

another view of the spalted maple top, this time near the pickups.

the back of the body. neck through with matching wenge electronics cover.

the only place where you can see this is a JP bass is there. it also has another detail that i have not asked for but the luthier gave me. my name is there :)

i can conclude one important thing. first, this bass is the best i own. i have an ibanez sr590 4 string, a tobias growler 5 string, a music man stingray 5 string and this JP 5 string fretless. i have tried other high end basses and for sure this fretless bass is the BEST i have touched so far.

in looks, in feel and in sound i have never stumbled a bass this good. by a big margin! it is THAT GOOD.

:bassist:

thanks :)

This bass looks fantastic, and I love the components and design. Hold onto that one!

like i said, the wait of almost 6 months was well worth it. the bass is awesome. thanls for the compliment :)

Que coisa linda!

és português? o baixo é espectacular. vai ao site do JP, se quiseres um envia-lhe um email, ele é porreiro.

for the rest of you, i just asked if devo_stevo is portuguese and said that jp is a real nice guy.

Absolutely great!

Looks fantastic, and what a nice piece of flamed spalted maple that is!! I think it looks better than the original zebrawood design.

Congrats on your new bass and I hope you get many years of enjoyment out of it.

Nope. I'm a regular old gringo from the USA, but I did spend 2 years living in Brasil about 11 years ago. Loved it there and loved the people.

ha, nice. i know some brazilian fellows too, nice people.

THATS BEAUTIFUL!!!!! you should make me one:p free of charge of course:rolleyes:

you should talk with JP. he is a fabulous guy and the price is very friendly. check his website! if you want details send me a PM.

I'm normally not into the boutique style basses, but this thing is beautifull, nice bass man

hey, those are good news, at least this bass took your attention even when you are not into this type of thing!

one important thing i forgot to detail: the feel!

this bass is very comfortable. it is easy to play fast, it is easy to play up the neck.

and one important factor in fretless basses: the amount of mwah! man, if i want this bass mwah's like no other! :)
