I'm new to home recording, the only recording I am familiar with is direct to a 32 track boss unit I no longer have access to.
I will be sending my Music Man Sterling HS (active) through a sansamp BDDI, and will be using my current laptop, a Dell Inspiron which has USB and Firewire and runs Windows XP.
I will also be using an M-Audio Oxygen MIDI Controller, probably through USB.
1) What is a good medium to use in between my BDDI and my laptop? I'm mostly just concerned with transferring a clean signal to my computer. I am happy with the tones I can get through my bass and the sansamp, and don't need extra color. My budget is less than $100 and I buy used.
2) What is a good, free, recording software that is also compatible with a MIDI controller? Is it really worth spending the money for "real" recording software?
3) What should I be looking for in a soundcard? I know I need to replace mine to use my MIDI controller, and want to make an all around smart purchase.
I'd appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.
