I would try having the young man learn on the right-handed instrument. I am self-taught, acclimated to an available guitar, then, a bass guitar, where both were right-handed instruments. I’m a “true” lefty, except for stringed instruments - go figure! Most left-handers are somewhat ambidextrous...
