Bass Search: Like a Lakland, but suits my preferences

No Ibanez basses? Alrighty bud, good luck with that search 👍

    Wal Bass Club.

Man that’s tough, I’m always looking for a unique bass that isn’t quite what everyone else has; I guess having a Wal in general qualifies. If I ordered today I’d definitely be looking at an mk3 again, just love the shape and playability. I would also be very curious as to whether Paul would be...

    Wal Bass Club.

Guys, I think I have a problem. I think I’m detecting the onset of Wal Acquisition Syndrome. All the pictures you post have taken their toll. I just don’t think one is going to be enough, whatever shall I do about the conundrum? 🤣

Fender Dimension bass pickup and preamp swap

I’ve never worked with Seymour Duncan pickups or electronics, so I can’t really attest to swapping them. But in my experience, Aguilar OBP preamps are really nice. I’ve installed quite a few in my day and they always improve the tone of the instrument. Their pickups are, in my opinion, “pretty...

beginning to get better at collaborating with my AI vocalist...

It always amazes me how confident people are in their incorrect presumptions and assessments.

    NBD: Maruszczyk Elwood L5

I have never played one but I very much like their configurator on the website. Lots of options and I would definitely love to have one or two in the arsenal one day, but can’t really justify any new bass purchases at the moment so that’ll have to wait. I saw a Sputnik with ash body and buckeye...

    Tobias Basses

I have an Epiphone made Tobias Toby 4 from Indonesia. I upgraded it with an Aggie preamp and lakland jazz pickups. It sounds great and is a surprisingly solid bass to play, the neck feels actually great for the price. While I usually play 5 string nowadays, I find myself grabbing that one first...

    New project bass!

They really are, I had one I was going to upgrade but it spent so long in the previous owners case I couldn’t get rid of the smell 😭 I ended up doing the mod on an Ibanez BTB I had instead and moved on from that particular lakland bass.

    New project bass!

Good luck and enjoy yourself, though it does become addicting. I did a similar project last year with a used Tobias Toby bass that I picked up a while back and was collecting dust. Put in an Aguilar OBP3 w/bypass switch and I got some single coils from Lakland (the same they use in their DJ...

Slap: I get the THUMP, but don't understand how to get the best POP

Play from the wrist, exactly 👍

Slap: I get the THUMP, but don't understand how to get the best POP

Great explanation, I was going to use the exact same analogy about turning a door knob. So much of the technique is the rotary motion of the wrist and not so much the fingers that do the popping. 👍

Would you trust and buy a bass you've never tried before?

I think 10 out of the 12 basses I own I purchased for the tone alone, having never played them before. I’ve been happy with all of them :)

    I'll genuinely miss Stephen Colbert...

thanks for all the wagers made so far! Still taking additional in anticipation of some heavy duty thread lock hitting this post anytime now! :D

How much a fretjob cost at your local luthier shop?

That’s expensive for simply dressing up the current frets, seems more like a complete re-fret price to me. 🤷‍♂️

MTD Norm Stockton or Ibanez Mode: would you know the difference without looking?

They both sound good, but I was able to tell when the basses changed while listening eyes closed. Mode does have more of that jazz bass tone and I actually think it sounds better of the two (though they both sound great, just preference). Very impressed with the Ibanez Mode basses, I’m...
