How should a 3 piece band set up?

Not sure why you'd do it any other way than dummer in the center with a 3 piece. Why is guitar in front of your drummer? Even if I were the only vocalist, I'd feel like a douche standing directly in front of the drummer.

    wearing shades on stage

I wear them inside and out. Lighter for inside. Because it's cool? Maybe, but really I now need readers and I can get shades with hidden readers LOL!

Should I replace my pickups? Or my preamp? or am I just insane?

Try some good active basses. You may just need the ability to sculpt your EQ rather than screw around trying to find active setups that have it by chance

    E string dying very fast

TBH if you like the sound of new strings, you'll notice the E dies quickly on your players. Follow the steps other people have noted, but this is just how it is if you like the sound of new rounds. GHS sells individual strings if you like their sound, you could just stock up on Es. I end up...

    Heavy top, light bottom

I've used 100 and 105 and prefer 105 for tension. 110 for Eb standard tuning or shorter scale. On a guitar I use Medium bottom, light top or even heavier bottom cause they have better tone (SRV style) on cleaner sounds, but I can't say that I notice much difference in tone between bass strings...

    Should I keep this bass?

At $1400, if you really vibe with it and it will become a bass you use alot, I'd keep it. If it's $1400 for a damaged bass that you don't know if you like, and it may just sit in a stand, I'm sending it back. $1400 is the kind of price point where it's an underpriced nicer / older bass that...

Action a little high for me?

Some basses will need nothing season to season. Some need major truss adjustments. I have one like yours that goes high in the winter. The saddle height doesn't change, but the neck front-bows which significantly changes the action (high). You probably need to check relief and adjust each...

Who does the sound tech serve?

Ideally the sound guy has a better ear, or equal to the best ear the band has. When this is true, bands sound great. Unfortunately that's not always the case. Likewise when a certain band member thinks they know what sounds right, but really have a terrible ear for mixing, you really don't...

    Paul McCartney SNL

He's 83, and I hope I can be 83 much less function on a stage. I think there are many musicians who really shouldn't be getting up on stage anymore, but I think there is a combination of them still wanting to do it for the thrill, and the fact that "hey, if people will still pay to see me...

Other basses feel much weirder to Play Compared to my one at Home/ Advice for getting a new bass

At least at my local GC, the bass setups are not comfortable at all. All too high, it must be their default maybe to prevent any fret buzz, but it basically makes it impossible for me to tell if it's a player or not when the strings are 1/4" off the neck. If I were really interested in one of...
