It's good habit to resolve every solo line into a 3rd or 5th of a chord. Root is too ordinary. 7th and 9th sound strange, but are good to target the root. Some melodic ideas can be found here [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] One way to compose a good solo is to yank fragments you like...

i agree sounds strange but some of those licks are really nice. i simply don't use play links, my bass knows how to treat them correctly :)
