    Re-evaluating my amplification situation

I have a fearless F212. I use it with either a Carvin head (B1000) or my preferred amp, a Demeter head. It's so loud that I cannot imagine ever having a volume issue. I'm rarely turned up very loud. And both amps have direct outs to boost things if needed. I used this with a rock cover band with...

Your bass line on "Your Smiling Face"

Very late addition to this thread, and I hope you're still reading it Mr. Sklar. First let me echo the words of thanks for your participation in the thread. And I love the bass part on that song, one of my favorites ever. I have a question: The tone of the bass on the recording is really nice...

How much equipment do you have?

I have: 1. Demeter head--I forget which model. I keep it in a rack case with a tuner and a power conditioner. I rehearse with this amp and use it on gigs. 2. Carvin B1000 head. I keep this in a bag and I bring it with me to gigs as a backup. 3. Fearless F212 cabinet. I use this for rehearsals...

    Who needs five strings??!

I'm not above wearing a G string if the gig called for it, but I'm more a black jeans/white shirt/skinny tie kind of guy. This is an interesting thread in many ways. I've been tempted to set up a bass BEAD. I have an old beat up MIM jazz that I was thinking of selling....maybe I'll try it...

Need advice on Venue booking issue have

I love reading this and knowing that every band goes through pretty much the same thing. I've only been doing this a little over two years, so I'm a big time noob. But that's still long enough to learn the routine. I'm sure some of you are club owners/managers or have been....or know...

How Long Should Getting a Band Off the Ground Take?

Really interesting thread. My sense is that you already know what you want to do and what you think is best, and you are "crowd-sourcing" to see if your opinions make sense. Take the course of action that you believe is most sound. I'm certain that there are many, many different paths a...

Hard cases vs. Gig bags... What do you own and what do you take to gigs/rehersals?

I always bring two basses to gigs. I always use gig bags. Asking my wife for the double Mono bag for Christmas this year!!

Going fretless: new bass or new neck?

Don't re-neck your Carvin. Buy a new bass. I say NEVER buy a cheaper instrument just to "try it out" or to see if you "really like it." Always buy something you think is good and that you think you would want to play often.

    Intonation help

Witness point your honor? Meaning to push down on the string to set it against the saddle? I probably don't do that every time. Thanks.

    Intonation help

I understand that. What I mean is that I have been told that intonating to harmonics is wrong because we play fretted notes much more often.....but I see now what you mean. You are comparing the fretted note AT THE TWELFTH with the harmonic....instead of the open note.

    Intonation help

Duh. You are correct. I was leaving out the added step of the harmonic....

    Intonation help

Thanks....yes I retune after saddle adjustments. Not sure I understand what you are saying about 12thfret harmonic v. fretted....are you saying you make NO comparison of the open string to the 12th fret pitch when intonating? Or does the 12th fret harmonic take care of the open string?

    Intonation help

I own several basses. While I rely on experts for most things, I change my own strings, make occasional truss rod adjustments, and adjust the bridge for intonation, etc. My problem is with intonation, particularly the low B and E strings. I've been told to use an accurate tuner, such as a...

Help with finer points of intonation

I own several basses. While I rely on experts for most things, I change my own strings, make occasional truss rod adjustments, and adjust the bridge for intonation, etc. My problem is with intonation, particularly the low B and E strings. I've been told to use an accurate tuner, such as a...

The Real Reason Why Bands Play the Same Old Tired Covers

Great, provocative thread. I'm 50 and the only gigs I played before age 45 were concerts with choirs that I sang in. My wife and I began working on a cover band project a few years ago and have been gigging for a little over 2 years. I am the bass player. We play some of the songs mentioned...
