Double Bass Repair broken neck on upright bass

Thanks for the advice, Greg. I did end up using epoxy to attach a ~1/8" maple shim on top of the neck so the way up to the peg box and then hide glue to reattach the fingerboard. Extending the shim past the fingerboard let's me use the existing nut without modification. Sad to cover up the...

Double Bass Repair broken neck on upright bass

I thought about adding a shim on top of the neck under the fingerboard but running it all the way up to the peg box to reinforce the break. Bridge height is currently 5 3/4" so I don't think I need to gain much height. Routed in two 1/8"x3/8"x12" channels for carbon fiber reinforcement through...

Double Bass Repair broken neck on upright bass

Thanks! Just glued up with T-88. I used a nice thick maple board to help keep everything lined up. Plastic tape over the board to keep the epoxy from sticking. I did a dry run to make sure I could get the pieces in place and properly aligned. There were a number of splinters and bits of wood...

Fair enough. Once I'm done with the repair I think you'll see why I did it.

The fingerboard was already about half way off from the fall that broke off the scroll. Would you have just squished in some glue and clamped the bottom of the board to keep it in place?

Repair underway. A little heat, steam and palette knife and the fingerboard is off nice and clean.

Double Bass Repair broken neck on upright bass

Thanks for all the feedback. I already have some t88 in the shop so will probably use that. I'll document the repair as I go if only as a "this is what not to do!" Does anyone know what finish is on these Engelhardt basses? Is it lacquer? Certainly does not seem like any kind of proper oil...

Double Bass Repair broken neck on upright bass

Thanks for the recommendations. Any reason for G2 over T88? I'm not opposed to using hide glue - I have real hide glue and know how to use it. The only thing is that I don't think simply gluing this joint will be strong enough, even if done very well. So if I'm going to insert carbon fiber...

Double Bass Repair broken neck on upright bass

Reviving an old thread here but I have a similar repair need and thought I would see if there were any alternate suggestions for this one. My neck broke right by the nut. There are several "splinters" that are fairly large. I'm not sure that I will be able to get the joint back together...
