Also, I found out who the luthier was. Owner says it was a guy named Bill Hutnik. There is a thread about him here: Hutnick Do bass guitar guys know how to put a pickup and dots on a double bass?

I emailed the guy. This is what he says: The dots were put in by a professional luthier. I don’t know what they are but they are put in extremely well and you cannot even feel them.....very smooth and flat with the neck.

I have no idea what was even used to make the dots. I wonder if they can be removed

Thanks for your responses! The thing I was looking at on the photo of the pickup is that it appears that a piece has been wedged under one of the "feet" of the bridge. Is that the way it is usually done?

For the record, here in Canada I was quoted $3600 + tax Canadian $$ for a new Eastman VB95 inc bag and bow.
