Ear and tone perception calibration test (Fender JB American Deluxe + John Suhr)

The bass sounds fine and is giving the player what he wants, but I’d have a hard time defending this as the “best bass tone” I’ve ever heard. Does this mean I’ve failed the ear tone calibration test? 😝

The Brecker Brothers Band: founders of music school Funk?

This is all true. My point is Miles cut his teeth as a musician by playing jazz gigs in clubs, not by getting fed jazz music at university.

The Brecker Brothers Band: founders of music school Funk?

I believe Miles entered Juliard at the behest of his father to learn classical music. Miles agreed to go to Juliard because he knew it would get him to NYC—where jazz was haplening and he could be a part of it. According multiple biographies and Miles’ autobiography, Miles dropped out because...

The Brecker Brothers Band: founders of music school Funk?

@Dr. Cheese — I totally see your point regarding the Brecker Bros as “music school funk”. However, I will state that in my opinion (for whatever that is worth to anyone), the BB’s are more a fusion group that pushed the syncopation thing a bit. Other contemporary fusion groups: Weather...

Very many times those “right buyers” are GC employees that get ‘first dibs’ on the new gear and pass off inside news of the gear to flippers on Reverb or even well-known ‘mom and pop’ stores that specialize in vintage and rare.

When where was this Jazz Bass made?

1975. Probably early 1975, due to four-bolt neck plate. Cool!

Olinto flats on a 52 Precision

The original P-basses were string-through body, as is yours. Those basses shipped with flat wounds, strung through the body. There were no obvious problems with string breakage on those basses compared to round wounds through-body or flat wounds top-loaded through the bridge. As @2saddleslab...

    String lube: Any homemade recipes?

If you’re not into the grease thing, another option that will serve to keep your fingers dry and limit stickiness/tackiness of the strings is baby powder. Works for me outside (or inside) any time I need to reduce tackiness. A lead guitarist I play with also swears by it. I learned of the...

Those “condition” ratings are completely in the eye of the beholder. If you can’t get to the store to try something out yourself, you can call and ask to speak to someone to get the low-down.

I’m normally not into NBD posts, but this one is really pretty! I wonder what it sounds like?

James Jamerson, god of chromatic runs

Practice playing chord tones on the strong beats (1,2,3,4) and chromatic notes on the off-beats. As suggested above, the chromatic tones provide tension and lead into a chord tone from directly below or above. For instance, when playing over C7, the chord tones are: C, E, G, Bb. You can...

6 months seems like a long time for a repair of a tube amp. That said — it is amazing amp and SO worth the wait!
