I have one too, they are excellent

I had this very issue with my SVT Classic, only difference was, that the classic would distort and then lose volume. Turned out to be one faulty power valve. Once replaced and re-biased, worked perfectly.

I’d be somewhat surprised if you bought lemon considering Yamaha’s quality control process? Their instruments are quality checked and produced to the nth degree of perfection. Not having a dig at your luthier but I’d be a little concerned at his statements.
