    N(tm)BD - fretless edition

Congratulations on a fine bass! I got my Ursa SX fretless, just like yours, last December. By midsummer, I had worked up enough courage to gig with it (my first fretless). The first time he heard it, our sound guy -- who had been bugging me to improve my tone -- grinned at me and said, That's...

75 year old bass gigging virgin who is SOOO confused. Please be gentle.

with some help from TalkBass, I found a solution that is lightweight and flexible. I have two Rumble 100's, each weighing 22 lb. When a single Rumble 100 isn't loud enough, I daisychain the second one to it, using the effects loop (cord running from effects send on the first amp into effects...

Curious? What would you want on your epitaph? Here lies Dave Hope he was a . . . . bass player

NBD my 1st fretless: SX Ursa 3 short scale

Your post, along with others in the same vein (eg, "try playing eith your eyes closed") have me VERY EXCITED to the experience the magic of playing on a wide-open fingerboard. Again, thanks to all

NBD my 1st fretless: SX Ursa 3 short scale

I don't know the brand of the flats that came on it. When I've had time to play it for awhile, I'm sure I'll experiment with different strings. I like GHS Precision flats, and I like the Labella's on my Epiphone Viola. The fingerboard is maple with a clearcoat. I'm getting some great ideas...

NBD my 1st fretless: SX Ursa 3 short scale

I'm happy! So far everything about this bass has exceeded my modest expectations. It arrived via UPS in good shape, and I loved it at first sight. Everything on it looks good: nice clearcoated wood grain, decent hardwear, flatwound strings. I tuned it up and was ready to try it: my first time...

Intrigued by an Ibanez (Mikro series) 28.6" scale bass, would love some testimonials

I've had my 4 string MiKro for 2 years now. I really like it. I put GHS Precision Flats on it. Good build quality, impressive for the price. Nice range of tones when you roll off the treble. Stays in tune, tuners are adequate. Used it for a gig once and it sounded good in the mix.

Do you ever listen back to recorded gigs?

My Tascam portable audio recorder shut down randomly while recording a gig last fall (missed the last 2 sets--disappointing). Even though the battery level was ok afterwards, I suspected a power fault was responsible. So now I connect a USB power bank to the recorder to bypass the AA batteries...

What is your most fun song to play?

Addicted to Love. the bass groove just drives that song. I like playing the riff with open strings. Santeria. one of the few songs in our set list that has a reggae feel. I've been wanting to add some reggae grooves to my so-called repertoire. Love the drop one.

Recommend a lightweight bass amp for a retiree

Yes! I've got an inexpensive, collapsible hand truck that works well. Stairs, however, are still a problem.

Recommend a lightweight bass amp for a retiree

I'm severely limited in how much weight I can lift. At 22 lb, a Rumble 100 is something I can handle easily by myself, and I (and my band) am happy with its tone. I have two Rumble 100s that I daisy chain when I need the extra volume.

What gave you the sound you have been searching for?

    1. GHS Precision Flats on my MIM PJ Mustang. 2. Soloing neck pickup. 3. Plucking closer to the nut. 4. Rolling off the treble with the tone knob (on bass). When I play Come Together, the elements listed above give me the tone I want.

    Need recommendation for electronic drums

I bought a Yamaha DX452K in February for $700. I haven't tried other edrum kits, but I was impressed by the music store demo: the sound and feel were surprisingly good. I'm very happy with this Yamaha kit.

What's your favorite short scale bass to play?

Thanks, John--I've always loved the Beatles so my list of tunes that I cover has lots of their stuff. Blues, classic rock, and lately some country. Cheers!
