    Cool 1966 Baldwin Bison.

** I should add that the above pickups are Bar-O-Matics and not Rez-O-Matics, but they have similar housing.

    Cool 1966 Baldwin Bison.

@Muck Luto shared this video with me on a rewind of these pickups. It seems possible, but a delicate process.

    Cool 1966 Baldwin Bison.

Old thread, but here is a little more information. Baldwin Baby Bison bass guitars are quite good. The Bar-O-Matic pickups are really punchy and sit very nicely in the mix. All of the final series Baldwin bass guitars had Bar-O-Matic pickups. This included the Baby Bison, Vibraslim, Shadows...

Serge Gainsbourg - that Je t'aime bass sound (Again)

Thank You! I haven't considered rewiring the bass yet. Currently, it is being set up so I will see how it feels after a refret. I have a Baby Baldwin with 2 Bar-O-Matik pickups and La Bella flats, a GB66 with Ultrasonic pickups currently restrung with black Rotosound RS88EL strings and I am...

Serge Gainsbourg - that Je t'aime bass sound (Again)

Thank you for all of the information... the photos, the songs, the revelations! Please keep them coming! I ended up buying a Baldwin Bison from Sweden, albeit a VERY different Bison than the ones that you own. I am in the process of fixing it up. This one has much more in common with the later...

Serge Gainsbourg - that Je t'aime bass sound (Again)

I love the picture! I am a sound engineer. I am often studying studios, especially 1960s ones, to try and get music to sound "right" to my ears. At some point, I realized that I wasn't trying to replicate the sound of the guitars alone... but the entire chain and what ended up being released on...

Serge Gainsbourg - that Je t'aime bass sound (Again)

You are not really trying to replicate the sound of a live bass, but a recording of a bass. This is probably something that you have considered, but they are very different. The Olliff chain was likely Bison -> Amp (or direct?) -> Philips EL 6023 or AKG D12 microphone (if amped) -> Neve console...

Serge Gainsbourg - that Je t'aime bass sound (Again)

What else have you tried, besides the RS77's and the Thomastik JF 344's?

    Burns Owners Club

The Baby Bison with the Bar-O-Matik pickups can really nail that Burnel sound. I was thinking about stringing it with black Rotosounds like the GB66 bass, but it is nice to have two Burns bass guitars with very different flavors. I have 2 Baldwin Split Sound guitars and a Burns Vibra Sonic...

    Burns Owners Club

Officially adding pictures of my Baldwin / Burns basses to the woodpile. Baldwin Baby Bison with La Bella 760FS-M Deep Talkin' Stainless Steel Flat Wound Standard Medium Scale Bass Guitar String. The strings in this picture were not the correct size or type. I use this bass for more brutal...

Rotosound RS88LD Black Nylon - Are suited for what kind of music?

Dave Richmond discusses his playing on Melody Nelson in this thread: https://www.talkbass.com/threads/who-really-is-the-bassist-on-histoire-de-melody-nelson.1326990/page-2

Rotosound RS88LD Black Nylon - Are suited for what kind of music?

There is a big thread about Melody Nelson and Dave Richmond was the player, although it was originally thought to be Herbie Flowers. I think recently uncovered images from the sessions show Dave. https://www.talkbass.com/threads/serge-gainsbourg-melody-nelson.1615119/

Dave Richmond with a Burns Bison, not Herbie.

    Burns split sound bass 6

From what I gather, what you have is a baritone guitar and not a proper bass VI due to the scaling. Baritones are cool, though. The Split Sound bass is a rare one.

    Burns split sound bass 6

I hope that Peter can help you! Below is the description of the 6-String Bass from the Burns book, but no information on tuning. This is what a search says that you should be able to use, based on the scale length of 24 3/4. For a 24.75-inch scale, a slightly heavier gauge than usual baritone...
