The Velvet folks are excellent at customer service. After I explained what happened and sent photos of the problem strings they sent me a new extended E and D string. I haven't installed them yet-- maybe I'll give 'em another shot come January.

My 6-week old extended E string bought the farm this morning. I have a KC Strings extension and the place where the fabric and metal meets was around the top pulley. I was suspicious of this when I installed it but then figured this is a standard extension and the design should be sufficient...
