What's your approach to having more than one bass? Purely tone, or are there other reasons?

I can come up with any reason under the sun but if I really think about why I have so many instruments, I just can't explain it. I don't ned them. Some I will probably never play again. I just gotta have them. And I'm looking for another.

Going from five strings back to four

The thing is that more and more commercial artists are using 5 strings. And as a covers band playing what the crowd wants to hear, you often find you need a low string to do the song justice. Incubus, Nickleback, Maroon 5, just 3 examples where I wasn't happy with the bass line til I played on...

Going from five strings back to four

I find fwhen I have that hankering to just play 4 strings, I pick up my 5er and it has a 4 built right into it. There are some songs I play that only require 2 strings, but I'm not gunna search for a 2 string bass.

    Unsung Singing Bassists

Have you ever tallied how many basses you have owned over the years?

Over 32 years I have purchased 10 basses. Only ever sold 1. That one was nice to play but it's sound was dead. Replacing all the electronics made no difference and putting the electronics out of that one into another actually made a huge improvement. This told me there was no hope for it. But...

Jealous partners disrupting bands, part 373: And now it's happening to me!

Just saying I've seen it happen so many times. The more a partner worries about losing their relationship to another person, the more they lose trust and that can end a relationship.

Jealous partners disrupting bands, part 373: And now it's happening to me!

It's the way of women. They are insecure and that insecurity drives a wedge between couples. Self fulfilling proficy. Maybe the whole band could sit her down and tell her that they will keep an eye on the guitarist to keep her mind at ease. But if she doesn't allow the band to progress, he will...

Seems like most instruments have "the song"...so what is it for the bass?

Floyd-Money. You will note that I don't need to provide a shortcut to the song so you can listen to it. You all know it. Bet it's playing in your head now.

    Timing issues

If you are struggling with keeping a steady rhythm then maybe bass isn't for you. Sounds like you should switch to drums!:roflmao: But seriously, get comfortable, headphones on close your eyes, relax and just play along with your songs without overthinking. Don't start or stop the playlist...

How many have had amps over 10 years and still use them?

I've been using a Trace Elliot smx that I bought second hand in the 90s. Was using thru a Peavey 4x10. Couple of years bach I cut down to 2x12 TC Electronic for portability. Last year I moved to a TC E. Rh450 head for the same reason. Still have the trace as backup. And still can't get the...

    Why do folks cut strings?

I always cut. Never had slippage. Tidy headstock. No risk of taking out someone's eye with stray bits sticking out. Excess length going round and round while winding just scratches your headstock. Second hand strings is not a thing.

is it worth buying a 5 strings ?

I have to disagree. Yes my fender 5 is heavy and the neck is like a highway, but look outside of fender. I have a wasburn 4 , xb800. Love it but don't use it coz I play 5ers. So just got hold of an xb500. Identical weight and size. Neck is only slightly wider - not noticeable. And no thicker...

Looking at used basses is just so depressing lately...

Spare a thought for those in other countries. I just bought a 90's washburn 5 string. A mere $261 U.S. Throw in shipping and exchange rate and import tax, ended up costing $1023. Although I did pay $1600 for the 4 string version brand new back in the 90"s and I'm more than happy with that. I...
