Thanks! I think I got that part even if it is easier said than done. If I understand you right the goal is for the string to be in full contact on both incomming and outgoing edge of the slot. That is a break angle on both sides.

My concern with a zero fret is that it will wear out much faster than a metal nut. Every time you tune the bass a round string will grind over a round fret in a 90 degree angle.
