Looking for a modern and ergonomic JJ style bass

I just received a new Sadowsky Metro Express yesterday. It feels and plays great. I too was looking for a slightly more modern jazz bass. The Ibanez Mode bass looked intriguing but I didn’t care for all the knobs, and the sound clips I’ve heard so far aren’t really close to a traditional jazz...

Is the Empress Bass Compressor Really That Transparent?

I’ve been using the Empress Bass for 4-5 months now, and I think it has more coloration than other compressors I have tried. I was using the Keeley Bassist prior to the Empress, and I thought it was very transparent. I wouldn’t consider the Empress to have drastic coloration, but I do hear a...

    Song starting panic

For quite a few years I used to make little cheat sheets for songs that weren’t easy to remember, or for odd key changes or bridges. It helped quite a bit, especially when we were covering 55-60 songs and occasionally throwing in new ones. Over the past 5 years or so I quit making those...

Basses similar to the Fender Precision American Pro II?

The BBP34 would make my list before the Fender. I have not owned the BBP but I do have the BB434, and I had a 734. I picked up a Reverend Decision P a couple months ago and installed the EMG Geezer pickups in it. The fretwork, balance and feel is excellent. I wasn’t crazy about the blade...

    Possible NBD incoming: need opinions

IMO you get more bass for the money with the Yamaha. I had a Geddy Lee CIJ and it was nice and sounded great, didn’t care for the slim neck. I haven’t had a BBP, but I’ve had the BB734 and still have a BB434.

    Empress Bass Compressor S&D

I just ordered an Empress bass compressor a couple days ago, should arrive tomorrow. Looking forward to trying it out. The features and control look impressive.

Looking for a new amp head

My first thought is the Genzler Magellan 350. I’ve had mine for several years and it would provide a similar tone to the Eden. The GK Legacy or MB200 might be good options as well. I haven’t owned the WTX260, but I did own a WT300 for a few years. From what I remember it had a very clean...

Is it true what they say about basswood bodies?

Three of my basses are basswood. I think they’re great and I would have no hesitation to buy more. Two of my basswood basses I have owned and gigged for over a decade and they still look great. The basswood topic comes up regularly on TB, and I’ve never really understood the concern...

Sandberg California TT5 vs. Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe V?

I’ve owned both in the 4 string versions. The Sandberg is miles ahead of the Fender in quality. I had the Black Label pickups on my TT and they are a little more modern sounding than the Fender pickups…a little less mid scoop on the Sandberg.

Texting to see if rehearsal is still on when it has already been discussed and agreed to....why?

We always text the day of rehearsal as a reminder for everyone. We’ve had our drummer fall asleep and miss practice before.

Best fretwork out of the box?

Out of the 60+ basses I’ve owned, my Sandberg had the best fretwork. A couple of Carvins I had weren’t too far behind the Sandberg.

Fender bass : what made you choose an MIA over an MIM or vice versa?

I just checked my list of basses I’ve owned and I’m at 22 Fender and Squier basses. I’ve owned some pretty lousy MIA and MIM basses over the years. The newer (post 2008) MIA basses have all been pretty good. The only two P basses I have now are both Squier Classic Vibes, both CIC. I’ve had a...

    Talk me down (HX Stomp)!!

I did the opposite of the OP - owned a HX Stomp for about a year and then sold it for the B2 Four. I would say the HX Stomp has much more control over the tones you can get. If you like spending a lot of time dialing in your sounds then the HX is great for that; I’m sure it can do much more...

Looking for a cool pj bass under $400 that is not a fender looking thing (not hating on fender btw)

I’d go for the Yamaha. You might find a used bb434 in that price range. I have a bb434, and I owned a bb734a. Yamaha makes nice instruments.

NBD - Sterling/Praxis Hit it out of the PARK!!!

Unfortunately it does still come through acoustically or when going through an amp. I’ve tried to isolate the vibrations but it sounds like it is coming from within the neck. It starts very faintly on the D string, then gets worse on the A and E. It occurs on both fretted and open strings...
