    Rig Upgrade Time.

OP said based on his 30+ year old rig, he likes the size of 15" drivers.

    Rig Upgrade Time.

It's not 1986. Driver size has nothing to do with tone. But those are solid choices

Would you play gigs with a band that doesn't have a great PA?

I wouldn't play gigs without an adequate PA anymore than I would play gigs without an adequate bass amp. Doesn't have to be fancy, and vocals-only can work if the rest of the gear is good and you are playing smaller venues, but ALL the band's gear has to be enough to do the job.

Receiving a Bass heavier than advertised

The bass was listed at 9.4 pounds. How can you return it if isn't 8.5?

    Is Paul right?

If you are being paid and/or asked to perform, your role/job is to entertain them, not yourself.

    Bass for acoustic rock?

Play any bass you like. If you are worried about looks, a bass showing the wood grain looks good.

As long as they are up front about what they are doing, it's their choice to decide what to play, and it's your decision to decide if you want to pay.
