Time NOW to have a band discussion.

I wouldn't play gigs without an adequate PA anymore than I would play gigs without an adequate bass amp. Doesn't have to be fancy, and vocals-only can work if the rest of the gear is good and you are playing smaller venues, but ALL the band's gear has to be enough to do the job.

Start saving up money. Then buy used.

Playing in a local pub is NOT the same as Bob Dylan. People bought tickets specifically to go and see him. You are being paid by the venue owner to entertain their customers.

It depends on the situation. There is a club near me that regularly does nights of totally originals acts, 30 minute sets. 95% of the audience is the performers (or their friends). I play this a couple of times a year, and do what I want, because nothing is expected. I play in a jazz band...

If you are being paid and/or asked to perform, your role/job is to entertain them, not yourself.

Play any bass you like. If you are worried about looks, a bass showing the wood grain looks good.

As long as they are up front about what they are doing, it's their choice to decide what to play, and it's your decision to decide if you want to pay.
