What's the best compliment you've ever received about your playing?

“You’ve got a nice feel”. I’ll take that, Thank you.

Are 5 strings on the way out?

If something is popular, it’s likely it’ll become unpopular. If you own your instrument for that reason then the tides are certainly going to go out at some point. If something is useful to you, it’s likely it’ll always be useful to you. If 5 is what you like or need then that’s all that...

Are 5 strings on the way out?

Spoken like a true Jazz Musician.;-)

How crazy is it to have 5 basses and not gig??

I think you need another bass and a cuddle. There are never enough guitars! The reality is you got them because you wanted them, the fact that you still love all of them is a testament to the instinct which drew you to them in the first place. Musical instruments are the greatest friends. Do you...

Are higher priced Fenders really worth it?

I do the same. I learnt how to adjust the truss rod saddles and intonation because as my playing has developed I’m getting a specific pattern of how I wanted my guitars to feel. I’d urge everyone to know how to tweak their setups. It saves a lot of money and if it’s needed on the fly. I write...

Are higher priced Fenders really worth it?

Same here. I’m a huge fender fan but I like standard models ie Strats J’s P’s and Teles as opposed to elite models, IMO they are the offerings that are not worth the money Fender charge. I think they serve their purpose but all the people I aspire to succeed like play classic standard models...

Are higher priced Fenders really worth it?

Agreed. I had an AVRI 65 Jaguar guitar, it was great except for the bridge. It was the same bridge from the originals which was not well thought out IMO. It made the strings rattle, it rattled itself. Was not worth £1900. My favourite thing to do is buy a Am Prof Fender and if need be, swap out...

Are higher priced Fenders really worth it?

I own an American Professional J made in the USA and it’s amazing. I played an American Performer J made in Mexico and it sounded amazing and felt great. Now for the important bit. I played both through a Mesa Bass Prodigy Four88 Head and a Mesa 410 cab. That is where the damage is really done...

Threatened of being fired (from 2 bands) because I won't take a spare bass...

My favourite part of the gigs is when we smash up the venue after our show. Really endears us to the venue and we pretty much become the house band after that, all without carrying a spare bass, Incredible.

Yeah but like all games of Chinese whispers, the story that started is not the story that finishes. Lol

Have you ever been embarrassed because of an instrument a bandmate is playing?

Why do I use it you ask? Because it’s the easiest guitar in the world to play. Like playing an electric guitar.

Have you ever been embarrassed because of an instrument a bandmate is playing?

I found a guitar on the side of the road in 2000 on a rainy day. It was battered, waterlogged, without tuning pegs and covered from body to headstock minus the fretboard in house paint. I felt I could save it so I did. I fixed it, got it playing, scraped all the paint off and cleaned it up. It...

Threatened of being fired (from 2 bands) because I won't take a spare bass...

I’ve been playing for 20 years. I take it seriously and although I’m not someone who likes confrontation, I can make the decisions that I need to make and say what needs to be said. I’ve not had it completely smooth but I have very few issues due to my upfront nature and my need to not stress...
