Double Bass How to correctly finish a DB neck

Many luthiers do a thin French polish, while others do some kind of oil finish. I think the two main reasons for a different finish are: 1. Facilitating smoother hand movement 2. Avoiding erosion of a colored finish

Double Bass Dressing a DB FB: recommended grit for final sanding

Double Bass Dressing a DB FB: recommended grit for final sanding

I go up to 800, then apply butcher block conditioner with fine steel wool. Looks amazing, feels amazing. I used to use boiled linseed oil, but I don't like adding weird toxic chemicals to something I'm going to be touching a lot. Natural linseed oil takes way too long to cure.

Double Bass Worth Putting a C-Extension on a 70's Plywood Englehardt?

For bluegrass, I’d say those super low notes are unnecessary. It’s just not part of the sound imo. If you’re not going to play classical, it’s even less necessary to get the extension. I second the opinion of others here about just tuning down to D when needed. I play tuned in fifths, so I have...

Light gauge strings for a 5-string

What would you recommend for lighter gauge flatwound strings for a 5 string bass? It’s a Fender Mexican Jazz Bass, longer scale string length. I really like the feel of lower tension.
