Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

Well if anyone cares, I plugged the amp/pedal/mixer into a different plug in a different room. The problem drastically improved. With the bass straight into the amp, unless I REAM on the strings there's no distorting/clipping. With the pedal the problem is the same as before. My guess is...

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

Yeah since yesterday I've unplugged everything so now it's just bass into the amp. Using my 10 foot cable. Hopefully the fault is just the cable, that'd be a nice change of pace. Much cheaper to replace than a preamp or DI box or amp.

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

Ah, I see. I'll check the cable thing later, maybe tonight. Someone (tbird I think?) mentioned plugging headphones into the bass itself to see if that is the problem? Is that safe to do? Can I plug my headphones' 1/4" plug into the output jack of the bass without blowing my headphones and...

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

I've tried different a cable. Specifically to check if the length of cable was the issue, I normally use a 10ft tweed cable but I also tried a 5ft plastic coated one. Guess I'll try a small army of them when I get home, I have around 20 cables of different lengths.

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

In that case my guess would be that the sound card can't handle the low frequencies. So it's both the amp and the soundcard? Because the amp clips when I'm playing the bass through it and not recording at all?

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

Clipping happens through the speaker as well as the headphone out. Which makes me think it's either faulty power or the preamp circuit in the amp overloading.

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

Actually that might be a contributing factor. I live in a trailer that was made in the 70's so I'm sure there's issues. I don't hear any hum or hiss though.

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

The headphones are still good, haha. I cycled through three 9v batteries I had unopened, so it's not the battery.

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

Thanks - Headphones or speaker, both gives me the bad sound. Yes - I've tried the bass > pedal > headphones and it was still bad. Also tried bass > mixer (the least problematic, but the sound is still there. Just not as prevalent.) and bass > pedal > mixer. Without turning the volume on the...

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

Sorry, I wasn't sure how much information was too much. The mixer doesn't have an interface with the computer, it sends it out to the Line In port. The sound is there whether I'm listening/recording through the headphone out or through the speaker. I'll try lowering the pickups, but wouldn't...

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

How can it be speaker distortion if I'm bypassing the speaker? And yes I've tried into the pedal, into the pedal and mixer - same ugly sounds, though not as bad. I'm going to be out of town for work for a few days so I guess I'll just tinker with it more after the weekend.

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

So if the (bass) amp can't replicate (bass) frequencies - sorry, that's ridiculously ironic to me - what would be the solution then? Turn the bass down and then EQ it back in in post?

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I play the same riff (kind of) a few times, volume on the bass totally up 100% and then rolled to about 15%. You can hear the higher notes sound pretty fine but the lower notes fizzle the amp up. This is bass straight into the amp, headphone out on the amp...

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

Sorry, I only have access to active basses.

Bass Amp clipping or Pickups clipping amp?

Overdrive on the amp is "off" and both gain and overdrive level are fully counter clockwise. The volume on the amp is set to 7oclock, so barely on. Hold on, I'll try to record a sound clip.
