Double Bass Pirastro Olivs vs Eva Pirazzi Slap on a cheap bass

Hi all, I recently bought a bargain Hungarian Szegedi (plywood) bass which I'm currently setting up as I really like its sound, and am considering which strings to get. My other (German) bass is fitted with Helicore strings, and the Szegedi came with Rotosounds which were completely dead. I...

Double Bass Owning two double basses with different necks

Thanks so much for the comments everyone.. I didn’t realise this was such a hot topic! A twist in the plot.. I forgot to mention the cheaper Hungarian (Eb) bass came with gut strings on it (unlike the other bass which has metal strings). I’m thinking more and more that this may be one of the...

Double Bass Owning two double basses with different necks

Fair play re harmonics instead of neck! I do worry though that if I just practice the Eb one I'll "loose something" with the D neck one.. has anyone had that experience before while owning two basses? And re string length - I think so.. the distances seem shorter on the Eb bass if this is what...

Double Bass Owning two double basses with different necks

Hi all, In a bit of a dilemma here, and would appreciate advice or opinions. I've owned a German Michal Glas double bass for many years which I'm generally happy with - it has a D neck, sounds really good bowed and I've recently had it set up nicely too. Then just by chance, about 6 months...

    Double Bass The Realist Woodtone

Thanks so much all. Some really good things to think about here. I had a listen and agree the Lifeline generally sounds better - more balanced and well-rounded but still with the same old Realist character which I love. My pickup needs are relatively basic (I rarely play gigs nowadays so the...

    Double Bass The Realist Woodtone

Very interesting.. I’m trying to imagine what ‘ever so slightly woodier’ would sound like! Thank you Gavin. Also a bit cheeky to ask, but if you also have a moment to record a little example of the wood tone I’d be eternally grateful ;) you’d be the first person on the internet to do so!

    Double Bass The Realist Woodtone

I don’t have adjusters unfortunately but that does sound really interesting.. this is a whole different conversation but would you but recommend installing them? Is it worth the investment?

    Double Bass The Realist Woodtone

I think they're very close but pretty sure they do sound different, based on what I read online (for example: Realist Copperhead or WoodTone for Bass — Vermont Violins.) Yet so strange there are no videos/recordings of the Woodtone anywhere!

    Double Bass The Realist Woodtone

Hi All, I've been using the Realist Copperhead pickup for over a decade and it's about time to replace it (one of the two contact mics in the pickup has died so it needs extra gain, makes extra noise, etc.) I'm generally happy with the sound of the Copperhead but can see that Realist also have...
