A lot depends on what opportunities exist where you live. How much time you have. And resources $$ available. Goals?? If you are aiming to play in a band or record CD's. The really fun stuff is when you play with very good musicians - it really gets you cook'n. Lessons, workshops, festival jams...

Lots of excellent suggestions above. Ask lots of people for suggestions where ever you go. Teachers. professional bands members. Go to workshops - like Pete Wernick for bluegrass folks. Even learning other instruments if you have the time. Most important thing is to have fun.
