So for those who feel cutting a gut string is wrong, does it do damage to the strings in some way? .... If you buy a gut String and the length is longer than a different maker before winding then why not cut it? I guess that was part of my original question as to how long other makers gut...

Kungfu … To make string close to straight with the nut it looks like the final wrap needs to go between the wall of the box and feed hole… these holes are so close to box wall there is only room for 1 wrap on that side… yet that is as close to straight in line with nut slot as possible

Yes the bass was made in 1937 and I thought the lowest tension would be best …. Also historically I would think gut would have been the original type strings … Since I know nothing about playing a upright I figured starting to play low tension also might be easier. I’m a guitar player ukulele...

Ahhh thanks 1st ….sorry I didn’t yet wind the A string on….. I stopped because I didn’t like the projected location the string as it really is much longer and was decidedly too long …. I did continue stringing and cut about 4-5” off the length of them and still not completely happy but it does...

So , Since I know nothing about Double Basses or Strings or how to play a Standup, I'm hoping for some clues on Strings... I'm thinking lower tension ... not overly expensive set... My goals are to sit in a room by myself and decide if I can develop a bit of self satisfying moments with this...

Thanks Greg…. ok so just to clarify the bow your discussing is without the strings on as I described the straight edge on the fingerboard or are you saying that with the strings on the bass the setup clearances should be 1/4” from the bottom of the string to the fingerboard thus final set up...
