Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout. I have a larger rig that I use for big venues (Mesa Subway D800 and BBC 12x15 Tank), but for most bar gigs I use the smaller walkabout. 300w of A/B goodness (tube preamp; solid state power). Sound is still amazing. Walkabout owners are a bit of a cult.

For “ALWAYS ON” get the Fairfield Modele B. It’s the same Barbershop circuit but in a mini, always on pedal. I use it for my class D Mesa Subway D800 to add some tubelike warmth at all times.

Or the Fairfield Modele B, which is a compact always on version of the Barbershop. I use it exactly as the OP wishes: to aid some tube amp-like dirt to a Mesa Subway D800. I also use an EBS Billy Sheehan OD which has a blend knob that is essential to keeping low end.

If you want an always on option, try the Fairfield Modele B. It’s the Barbershop in a smaller package and seems like it was created for bass players. I use it with my Subway D800 for a little hair as you say and it is the perfect solution to dirty up a Class D amp head.

I bought an SR405 as a back up to my Jazz Bass and liked the feel so much I'm selling the Jazz. I'm salivating over the Premium Series with the Nordstrand Big Single pickups. You should look into those.

You're spot on DJB. I've thought about selling my walkabout and my D800 and going all in on the WD-800. I've also fantasized about owning a gold plated jet pack. I'm standing pat for now but I'm all Mesa all the time at this stage.
