doghouse-mike

I have been playing bass in innumerable bands over the past 2 decades, since my debut in my hometown of Nanaimo, B.C. I cut my teeth on the funky R&B that was popular in the dance clubs on the West coast at the time. The aggressive styles of pioneers such as James Jamerson, Tommy Cogbill, Donald “Duck” Dunn and Rocco Prestia combined with a strong local culture of blues and rock players provided me with a solid foundation to build upon.

I moved to Montreal in 1999 and blended into the Quebecois blues scene rather quickly. After adding a doghouse bass to my trick bag, I was called to participate in projects anchored in the west coast jump and swing. In addition to blues bands, I participated in jazz combos and some folk ensembles (cajun, ragtime, folk blues). During this time I went back through the annals to study the pioneers of doghouse bass such as Ernest “Big” Crawford, Willie Dixon, Ransom Knowling, Jimmy Blanton, Paul Chambers, Charles Mingus and all the great players of the Swing era (gypsy, jazz, western).

These days I stay pretty close to home, playing 5-10 gigs a month as a freelance bassist and doing my own side project in which I play vintage blues on arch top guitars with a piano player.
