Show me your compact pedalboard setup

More or less- it helps my flatwounds poke out a little in the mix. It’s quite subtle, only really gets hairy when i dig in or play chords. Playing normally you wouldn’t think there’s a drive pedal on- until it’s not on. We have a quieter section in the set, but it’s the compressor that i drop...

Show me your compact pedalboard setup

I’ve been using just the compressor, tuner and di on a mini board for about a year, so this represents quite the expansion! My band recently finished recording our first album, which has highlighted to me what good a little saturation and the odd bit of chorus!

Your favorite (not G&L) “Tribute” bass ?

    A classic to be true!

Your favorite (not G&L) “Tribute” bass ?

The fellas. A 66 sunburst with la bellas, predictable jamerson worship- though i can’t get along with the pickup cover. The fretless is my Pino tribute and project bass, the idea is it’s a split between his fiesta red precision and his fretless stingray. I’ve been thinking of adding a bridge...

    NBD 1978 Musicmaster Bass

That’s nuts! (if you’ll forgive the pun) The Musicmaster’s nut width is 41mm, which feels appropriately tiny compared to the 66P’s 44mm. It’s wild how variable the specs can be when it’s all being finished by hand

    NBD 1978 Musicmaster Bass

I’m not aware of Musicmasters ever having phenolic saddles, but i did wonder when i first saw it- but no, they’re metal. It appears someone painted them black at some point for some reason??

    NBD 1978 Musicmaster Bass

You’re really not far off. Mustang body with a single coil Mustang guitar pickup to cut down production costs. 30” scale and a narrower neck/ string spacing than typical of Fender. They were intended for the student/ beginner market. They’re fairly common while being less desirable to other...

    NBD 1978 Musicmaster Bass

Would that dude happen to be the bassist for Improvement Movement? Because yes, it does indeed sound fantastic!

    NBD 1978 Musicmaster Bass

with the serial number on your bass’s neck plate, that serial would date that bass ‘74- ‘75- but we’ve since dated the pickup to ‘72 on this one. CBS seemed very fond of changing up their serial systems throughout the 70s, so everything is with a mucklesome pinch of coarse salt!

    NBD 1978 Musicmaster Bass

I truly hadn’t imagined that the neck and body came from different years, but that speaks much better sense than whatever was going on in my head. The scratch plate and body are definitely a match, the screw holes all match up. After reading your response, I realised i hadn’t looked at the...

    NBD 1978 Musicmaster Bass

Very happy to welcome this little fella into the family! I had a nice example one of these in the past, but regrettably sold it off… i’m nor making that mistake again! It took a fair bit of work to get it up and running. It’s had a lovely refret job from Bon Guitars here in Brighton, UK- and...

    Help lower my action!

Along with an angled shim, you’ll feel a massive difference with a properly cut nut. For fretless this can be VERY close to the fingerboard; 0.5-0.2mm! More or less a 64th to 128th of an inch.

    Nut files (A specific need....)

If you don’t mind a bit of a MacGyver approach, i’ve found the edge of a metal ruler inside a folded piece of fine sandpaper very usable as a nut file. Be warned, let the paper do the work, it can really eat through bone very quickly if you really drive it too hard- but it’s very effective. Try...

    The Fretless Club (Part IV)

This isn’t the first place for me to show this one off, but i really like to show it off. My first fretless, Tony Franklin neck on a mexican road worn body, La Bella 760s and a Lollar vintage voiced pup. It’s become my main bass in the band- so far they’ve not complained about my intonation...
