I think you should look for used gear if budget is a problem. It isn't like a used bass plays bad or anything. Look on Craigslist and find something cheap you like. You might be surprised with what you find.

Keep it fretless. I have played both fretted and fretless and find the fretless a lot more enjoyable to play. It might take some getting use to, but I think it is very much worth it.
