Agreed. The BB range from Yamaha are great IMO. Sire are also incredible value for money although I'm not sure they sound exactly like Fenders.

Certainly there has been no better time in history where so much bang can be had for so little buck. Regardless of which is ultimately the best, I'm fairly certain I could get a brand new bass for a few hundred which would be more than serviceable. That was much less likely 20 years ago.

That's a good analogy and possibly touches upon why some people won't play a top end Yamaha/Ibanez despite some of them (IMO) being very decent instruments.
