Is it MIK? I would pop the neck off and make sure it isn't plywood. Even if it is solid wood, it was painted for a reason. Usually the wood isn't as nice and it might be several pieces glued together that don't match so well.

I once saw a 70 something P bass with tremolo, that wasn’t to weird, but they tried to install a locking nut. It didn’t seem to work out so well.

Actually Bruce you can also get mirror polished aluminum, then you could cut your price in half.
