Thanks Lucas - it is indeed a beautiful bass that plays and sounds great. Whatever we end up doing, I'll keep the original pickups and harness so it can go back the way it was if needed.

Good to know - is your bass an SGC 5-string model? And what EMG P/J set did you use? I've looked at EMGs, but I don't see they have any alnico offerings (I do know they make passive pickups as well as active). I do agree that a rail might be what's there, but again I'm looking for alnico...

I haven't removed the covers to see, but that would make sense if they are rails (not much info on them). And your assessment is pretty much how I see everything else... it's really just the treble side that I'm scratching my head over. I'd love to avoid the extra cost of having the P pickup...

I'm not seeking the tonal change, my son is... and it's his bass, and I'm just looking to see if there are any alnico sets out there that would be are a direct fit. To me what's unusual about the placement is that both P pickups are the same dimension, and both are centered beneath the strings...
