The mando bass or mando contrabass in my avatar. It is about 100 years old, (c.1920) originallly 8 strings, now reduced to 4. Usefully it is tuned the same as a bass guitar, and has a 34 in scale length. So in theory an easy step up from an electric bass.

So that's why I can't get the Stu Cooke sound, -with my semi hollow with flatwounds. (Or perhaps it's more likely to be just me) . I will check out the bass player (probably need binoculars, the O2 is big, and we are not in the expensive seats.)

Try Hilary James -she has a mandobass, and her website mentions the name of the maker. Mine is about 100 years old, fretted, should be 8 string but converted to 4. Could easily be converted back, but I probably won't be in too much of a hurry to do that.
