    Double Bass Too much bottom..

I wanted to give an update on the situation: We installed Oliv D&G, moved the soundpost, and fixed the bridge. I cannot believe the difference. The sound has opened up completely, and it's nicely balanced now. The Oliv's sound incredible on this bass as well. I think this bass prefers lower...

    Double Bass Too much bottom..

Thanks so much for this. So, the bridge actually does not sit well. The foot on the E string is not making full contact. The bass came like this. Maybe I should get a new bridge made. This bass also had a top crack (repaired) that runs just next to the foot of the bridge (E-string). I'm guessing...

Thanks! I had no idea. I'll adjust it tonight and report back.

    Double Bass Too much bottom..

The bridge is actually not perfectly centered. It’s closer to the G-side f-hole, slightly. Could that play such a huge role?

    Double Bass Too much bottom..

My apologies, I meant mm yes. I bought it from my local luthier who at the time thought it sounded great (and so did I). I'm taking it back next weekend to try moving the soundpost. I noticed the imbalance when I played a local gig, and I guess now I'm fixated on it so I can "hear" it more than...

    Double Bass Too much bottom..

Hey Chris, G 8cm D 9cm A 9cm E 8cm I should also mention that all the open strings sound equal and have a lot of power. It's when I press on the fingerboard past 2nd position that the D&G strings start becoming weak.

    Double Bass Too much bottom..

Hello, I recently acquired an old German carved bass. This thing has TOO MUCH bottom! I'm not complaining.. but I'm starting to notice now that the D & G strings sound weak compared to the E & A. Especially above 4th position, the D & G sound very nasal with hardly any "bass". Sounds like a lot...

Double Bass Aquila Strings on a 39' Bass

Thanks everyone. What about Pirastro Oliv or Eudoxa? I see the Eudoxa G is 28kg, while the Spirocore G is 30kg. So those are pretty close. I've tried Oliv's before and I really liked them. Not sure how Eudoxa D&G compare to Oliv D&G. I remember also I did not like the Oliv D as it sounded too...

Double Bass Aquila Strings on a 39' Bass

Hi guys, Anyone has any experience with Aquila Gold Springs (gut or synthetic) on a 39 inch (scale) bass? I have spirocores on which feel great, but I miss the gut sound. Not sure if there is any gut or gut-a-like string that works with a smaller bass. I think gut strings prefer a 40-41 inch...

Double Bass Turning a 5 string into a 4 string bass

I just asked the guy to take off the low B string and let it sit for a couple of days and I'll go play it and record some audio. I'll post it here once it's done.

Double Bass Jazz pizzicato upright from metal to gut

I started my career with guts 8+ years and then moved to steel strings with an Oliv G which is a metal wrapped gut. In my opinion starting with gut strings is great as it will really push you to work hard. Intonation on gut strings is not easy and especially with the bow. Getting a clear sound...

Double Bass Turning a 5 string into a 4 string bass

Hey bud, I understand your thoughts. But yes, there are no basses here. I brought mine over from New York and I have a friend who brought 4-5 basses from Germany. There's also 2 German basses for the state orchestra. That's all the basses on this island and we are 8 bass players here. The rest...
