When I put Fender flatwounds (45-100) on my 72 Jazz and this Rick, they both exemplified any fret problems on the bass. Both used to have half rounds. Could it be the strings or generally flatwounds? Is there an easy way to check my frets without having to take it to a luthier (just to look)?

And how does one go about making a Jazz sound like a P (other than trading it in)? When I put flats on my J, it really made it obvious that it needs a fret job!

I have a 86 Rick 4003 (currently with half rounds, going to switch to flats), a 72 Jazz with flatwounds (that unfortunately has a few dead fret areas) and a 1990 Gibson Thunderbird. Playing music in The Cure/Simon Gallup, early punk/post-punk vibe. Which do you think is best?

I ended up putting a pair of Fender 9050Ls on my J bass. Sounds good so far (and way better than when I had half or round wounds on)! Thanks guys.

Would the lighter gauge (40-100) 77s make up for the stiffness or would I lose something? I have medium Half Rounds on now (50-105).

The finger drag is my least favorite thing about the half rounds. Fender vs. Chromes vs. Rotosound 77? Rotosound seems like a classic flatwound that some of my favorite post punk bass players could've used back in the day (all being from the UK and such).

Opinions on Rotosound Jazz Bass flats?

The Fender custom lights seem a little hard to track down. What do you think an ideal string gauge is? I'm thinking about getting either Fenders or Chromes because they're similar in price. Or should I just get some nickel rounds for my T-Bird and call it a day? :P (or do flats/halfs sound okay...
