    After going through the nightmare of importing a (non-VI) instrument to Brazil, I think I might route the DIY route too... Importing things here can lead you to pay additional 100% of the price you already payed, if not more.

    Really? I did not notice this... around when, you think? Nowadays they're going for a more rock/distorted sound... I'm not that fond of it too, but it's probably more comfortable for them.

    Just an update on my research... I'm currently watching The Cure live @ Paris 2008... First song, Plainsong... RS plays the 3 mini-humbucker VI... second song, Prayers for Rain, RS switches to the 2 humbucker VI. So they're not years apart as I thought earlier...

    I might have looked a bit obsessive, I know, but I found it very interesting. And up to now I had never realized how different the newer models sound from the original... Wouldn't splittable humbuckers accomplish the sound of single coils while still having the extra-oomph at button press?

    Oh s*** Actually, it's fitted with, guess what, the 3 mini-hbs!! And the traditional controls... seems it's exactly the same as the Ultra VI prototype... perhaps just a different body...
