I'll throw in my .02, even though I'm not a very experienced bass player. I went from a 4 to 5. I first tried tuning my 4 to BEAD, which I liked, but also missed the G string. I feel that a bass at least needs a low D. Maybe tuning a 4 to drop D would work (I often use drop D on my accoustic)...

Especially weird since I'm pretty sure I'm not a prophet.
