Building my first bass ever from a beautiful piece of Tiger Wood. Any advice welcomed :)

Thanks for these suppliers, I will definitely check into them! How many basses/guitars have you built?

Looking at what's available for pre-cut and pre-bent fret wire...I'm guessing I may have a hard time finding pre-cut pieces long enough for my neck, which will be 54mm to 88mm wide

Well, my cart is loaded full of goodies, most of what I'll need to finish off this bass. Currently trying to decide on fret wire. I've been reasoned out of stainless steel. EVO gold appears to be discontinued. Looking at StewMac's gold fret wire as an alternative...does anyone have experience...

    About That Quartersawn Maple.....

Well, I'm glad I stumbled across this thread! I was planning on making my neck out of a flatsawn piece of maple I've had for years, but I might just laminate the neck together now. Throw a couple stripes of something in there maybe... Food for thought...Thanks!

    Building a Double-neck Bass

Hey, I am also a bass-playing carpenter (turning teacher) currently on my first build! I'll be excited to see what you come up with! I am making a 35" 6 string out of tigerwood. Good luck!

Alright, I really need to buckle down and order my truss rod and reinforcing rods. My question is about this low profile truss rod: would I need to round it out for the truss rod to sit and function properly? (thereby buying the reamer), or does it sit fine in a square/rectangular channel? Am I...

Is the bass finished now? I'd like to see pictures! I do have a pine and MDF mock up that I'm doing all my figuring on before I do anything to my good pieces. Pictures 👆. I will look into the EvoGold fretwire

I can see the value in that. However, as it stands right now, I do not have square edges to work from. The tigerwood does have nice edges, and I could take the time to make both pieces the same size, but the basswood middle still has rough outside edges. I was going to work from the centerline...

Also for the neck… I want the headstock angled, not flat. Do I have to cut a scarf joint for that, or can I just add another block of wood at the back?

So to be a little more realistic about the actual build, I have taken my pine prototype blank down to 1” thick - same as my piece of basswood. I have 2 pieces of 1/4” MDF, the exact same thickness as the tigerwood and maple to simulate the front and the back. Should I use double-sided tape to...

Well, resaw is done, 2 book-matched pairs thicknessed down to 1/4”. I decided to go with maple on the back, considering the bass would be fairly soft. The maple is not quite wide enough, so maybe a strip of Purple Heart down the middle of the back, or a strip of the tigerwood ripped from one edge.

This is what I have for pickups. I don’t know much about wiring, but I believe if I buy another part, I can turn these passive pickups into active ones similar to the phat eq in my Ibanez.

Pine blank ready to cut. Basswood body glued and sanded, ready to go. Tigerwood jointed, squared and ready to resaw. I’m thinking of getting my neck template figured out next, headstock shape, scale length and whatnot. Still waiting for my bridge so I can’t draw that in yet. I have one...

I was planning for stainless for the simple fact that it lasts longer, but that being said, I have not wore out frets on any of my basses thus far. I’m guessing lower-end Ibanez would not be using stainless steel?
