    I'm back in business. The solder joints looked ok visually, but reflowing them fixed the problem so one must have been bad. I now have an extended earth wire to the bridge too, so any repairs in future should be easier. Thanks for the advice guys. :thumbsup:

I was playing quite hard slap on a fairly new Fender jazz bass (a Japanese 62 reissue, with stock passive pickups, stock wiring, no mods anywhere) and after a particularly hard thump the output...

    Thanks guys. I find it difficult to palm mute consistently for an entire song. Would it sound the same if I got some foam rubber to put under the strings near the bridge, or is that a different sort of muted sound?
