The oddest thing is that your friend's Fender Prophecy I, with its passive P and J pickups, isn't humming. If you're an EE have you put a scope on the mains and had a look at the waveform? Good luck with it... have you tried taking the bass round to a friend's house and seeing how the hum...

I came across your posts and registered with Talkbass just so I could join in! I hope you feel honored! ;-) You mention that you connected the pickups directly to the socket, bypassing all the other circuitry, but I don't think you specified whether they were still in the bass at this point...
